Winning will make you famous. Losing means certain death. In a dark vision of the near future, twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live TV show called the Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed. When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her sister’s place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

This book is very popular and I remember reading it for the first time; I adored it then and nothing has changed after the fiftieth read through. The emotions felt by Katniss and Peeta are so raw that it is hard not to fall in love with the characters. The plot development is crafted and developed well throughout the book and there are rarely any slow bits. The subject matter is quite morbid so for this reason I would not recommend it to younger teens, although there is nothing stopping them from reading it.
Each character manages to conjure up a different emotion in the reader so by the end of the Hunger Games the reader is hooked. It is a constant page turner and it is very difficult to stop at the end of the chapter. Even though Collins doesn’t use typical cliff hangers, she manages to subtly include devices which make you want to read on and finish the book in one sitting, which unfortunately isn’t always possible…
I loved this book so much and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys constant thrill and suspense in a book. Aspects of it can be disturbing so bear in mind that it is just a fiction book.
The second book in the series is here.
